RESIDENCE HALL CONTRACT
Receiving your room key or combination commits you to room fees for the academic year.
CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES
Residents must check out by scheduling an RA appointment or using express check-out envelopes from the building office. Room assessments for damages or cleaning are billed to student accounts, with notifications sent by email in June. Fees: $25 for improper check-out, daily housing charges for late check-out, and $50 for unreturned keys.
BREAK HOUSING
Campus housing remains open for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks, with winter break included in the academic year contract. On-campus dining and other services are limited during these periods.
DAMAGE PROCEDURES
After check-out, staff assess rooms and common areas for damages or cleaning needs, with charges applied to student accounts. Appeals can be submitted to the building Coordinator.
Students causing damage to NJIT property are responsible for repair costs and may face disciplinary action. Common area damages may be billed to all residents of the impacted floor, area, or building.
ROOM INSPECTIONS
Residence Life staff, along with the state fire marshal, inspects rooms several times each semester. Notices may be posted in advance, and staff may enter rooms without residents present to check for illegal items, cleanliness, and safety. Confiscated items must be claimed at the hall office by Thanksgiving or Memorial Day; unclaimed items will be discarded.
Failure to pass inspections may result in fines up to $50, judicial referrals, or dismissal from housing. Rooms failing inspection will be re-inspected within seven days, with further action for repeated failures. Break period inspections occur immediately after classes end.
ROOM SELECTION
Each spring, residents can participate in the room selection process for the next academic year, allowing them to choose their rooms and roommates.
PROCEDURES FOR POLICY VIOLATIONS
Violations in campus housing are documented on a Residence Life Incident Report, including incidents such as illegal parties, drug use, confiscated items, and sports in the halls.
SUMMARY OF PROCEDURES
When a policy violation occurs, an Incident Report is created and provided to the building Coordinator (or designee) for review. The Coordinator will contact the resident to schedule a meeting to discuss the violation. Failure to attend may result in further disciplinary action, including restriction from the residence halls.
During the meeting, the Coordinator will review the student's rights, the alleged violations, and the incident report. The student will then state whether they are responsible for the violation. If the student admits responsibility, sanctions will be communicated within five business days. If the student denies responsibility, the Coordinator will make a decision based on the facts. Students may request a hearing by another Residence Life staff member.
In all cases:
An appeal may be made based on 1) a question of fact, 2) a question of procedure, or 3) the severity of the sanction. Appeals must be submitted in writing to an associate or director of Residence Life within three business days of receiving the sanction notice. Failure to comply with the sanctions may result in additional penalties, including the possible loss of housing.
